L'Espagnol Samuel Sanchez remporte à 30 ans la médaille d'Or Olympique, sur le circuit de la Grande muraille. Il devance l'Italien Davide Rebellin et le Suisse Fabian Cancellara.



Sanchez a réglé au sprint, jugé en côte, un petit groupe comprenant également le Russe Alexandre Kolobnev, le Luxembourgeois Andy Schleck et l'Australien Michael Rogers, au terme des 245 kilomètres. Agé de 30 ans, le coureur d'Oviedo (Asturies, nord-ouest de l'Espagne) a suppléé son chef de file théorique, Alejandro Valverde (13e de la course), pour succéder au palmarès à l'Italien Paolo Bettini.
